After graduating from Boston College, cum laude, Tom went on to obtain his JD from Suffolk Law School and his MBA from Babson College.

Tom began his business career in 1973 with Faded Glory, the company that introduced the concept of "fashion" jeans to the world. He was instrumental in both the establishment & management of the company. The company was sold in 1978. Having an entrepreneurial flair, in 1980, he became the co-founder and eventually President, then Vice Chairman, and finally General Counsel for Leading Edge Products, a pioneer in personal computer marketing and distribution, which popularized the IBM clone strategy and set the trend for the growth of the entire personal computer industry. In 1988, Tom founded Shane & Paolillo, P.C., at its peak a law firm of 36 attorneys on both coasts, in which Tom specialized in corporate law and litigation.

In 1993, again, feeling the entrepreneurial pull, Tom founded Business Strategy Group, Inc., a marketing consulting, CEO coaching and strategy firm focusing on entrepreneurial emerging businesses, as well as mergers and acquisitions. Business Strategy Group, Inc. continues its operations currently with clients in Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Arizona and Vancouver Canada. Business Strategy Group was named by Lawyer's Weekly as one of the top consulting groups in Boston.

In 2003, Tom co-founded The Lending Team, Inc. which specializes in creative commercial real estate financing throughout the continental United States.
